Checksums and error control
نویسنده
چکیده
Computing has always had to live with errors, especially in data transmission and data recording. Sometimes these errors are only a nuisance and a simple retry can obtain satisfactory, accurate, data. But sometimes an error can be serious, and perhaps even disastrous if an accurate original copy is inaccessible. Two related, but somewhat parallel disciplines, have developed to deal with the handling of erroneous data, both part of the general theme of “Coding Theory” and collected under the generic title of “Error Control”.

Revisiting Fletcher and Adler Checksums
Checksums are routinely used to detect data transmission errors. However, design decisions about which checksum to use are difficult because of a lack of information about relative effectiveness of available options. We study the error detection effectiveness of the Fletcher and Adler checksums for random independent bit errors and burst errors. Our study reveals that in most cases the Fletcher...
متن کاملPartial CRC Checksum of SCTP for Error Control over Wireless Networks
In the StreamControl Transmission Protocol (SCTP), when a portion of a packet is corrupted, the entire packet will be discarded at the receiver side. This may result in degradation of the throughput of SCTP over wireless networks with a high bit error rate. This paper proposes a new error control scheme of SCTP using a partial Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) checksum to enhance the throughput per...
متن کاملPerformance of Checksums and Crc's Over Real Data - Networking, IEEE/ACM Transactions on
Checksum and cyclic redundancy check (CRC) algorithms have historically been studied under the assumption that the data fed to the algorithms was uniformly distributed. This paper examines the behavior of checksums and CRC’s over real data from various UNIX file systems. We show that, when given real data in small to modest pieces (e.g., 48 bytes), all the checksum algorithms have skewed distri...
متن کاملA diffusion reaction theory of morphogenesis in plants
Unified certifiable communication have led to many unproven advances, including reinforcement learning and evolutionary programming. After years of confusing research into forward-error correction, we argue the study of access points. In order to address this grand challenge, we use metamorphic modalities to show that rasterization and checksums can interfere to overcome this challenge.
متن کاملMaranello: Practical Partial Packet Recovery for 802.11
Partial packet recovery protocols attempt to repair corrupted packets instead of retransmitting them in their entirety. Recent approaches have used physical layer confidence estimates or additional error detection codes embedded in each transmission to identify corrupt bits, or have applied forward error correction to repair without such explicit knowledge. In contrast to these approaches, our ...
